What is it?
ISSF is a global coalition of acclaimed scientists, seafood industry leaders, and environmental champions launched the International Seafood Sustainability Foundation (ISSF) and based on shared concerns about the future of tuna fisheries and a desire to do something about it — together. They conduct collaborative scientific research and advocate sustainable fishing policies — promoting best practices to vessel owners, fishers, seafood companies, Regional Fisheries Management Organizations, and other stakeholders.
- It is publicly available;
- Provides detailed vessel information;
- Is independently-audited;
- Vessels fishing for tuna can register at no cost
- Green checkmark: Means one or more of the following: (i) the vessel appears in another ISSF public vessel list, (ii) the vessel participates in an MSC-certified fishery and/or a FIP, and/or (iii) the vessel participates in a FAD-management or other sustainability initiative(s).
- Information symbol: When clicked on, shows a vessel’s national registration number, radio call sign, RFMO numbers, and dimensions.
- PVR status symbol: When clicked on, shows current and historical information in the PVR for that vessel
- It identifies additional information, for example, if the vessel is part of a Fishery Improvement Project (FIP) that operates in an MSC-certified fishery.
- It also identifies if a vessel is registered on ISSF’s Record of Large-Scale Purse Seine Vessels.
What is it?
The ISSF PVR provides validated information about the positive steps each listed tuna vessel is taking in implementing specific best practices designed to improve responsible practices in tuna fishing (e.g., reduce the risks of IUU)
The PVR has been broadly adopted by leaders globally in the market and supply chain
The ProActive Vessel Register (PVR) is one of four public vessel lists that ISSF provides to foster transparency in tuna fishing. Fishing vessels can be registered on the PVR to show how they are following best practices that support sustainable tuna fisheries. View the full database of 1,500+ vessels here.
How to use it
You can search and filter the PVR by vessel name, UVI number, RFMO region, and many other characteristics.
The PVR identifies compliance or non-compliance with specific best practices as determined by independent, third-party audits. A green checkmark means the vessel implements the best practice.
What is it?
A companion to ISSF’s ProActive Vessel Register (PVR), ISSF’s Vessels in Other Sustainability Initiatives (VOSI) list is a transparency tool for the public that wants to understand which tuna vessels have made public commitments to more sustainable fishing beyond the commitments reflected on the PVR.
