Comptoirs Océaniques’ commitment to tuna transparency

Comptoirs Océaniques, the French premium tuna importer behind Fish Is Life, has partnered with SFP to build one of Europe's most transparent and responsibly sourced tuna supply chains.

Comptoirs Océaniques began partnering with SFP in 2020, seeking support to improve the transparency and sustainability of its tuna supply chain and to embed their corporate social responsibility (CSR, or RSE from the French acronym) values into all parts of the company.

The partnership pairs SFP’s science-based risk methodology and transparency tools with Comptoirs Océaniques’ direct relationships with fishing fleets and processing plants, a two-tier supply chain model that creates a uniquely grounded approach to transparency and improvement.

Highlights of our partnership

Ocean Disclosure Project (ODP): Comptoirs Océaniques began participating in the ODP in 2022 and now publicly discloses species, fishing zones, gear types, vessel flags, and sustainability ratings across all 29 fisheries in its supply chain, covering 95% of tuna volumes. This level of transparency is exceptional among European tuna importers.
Vessel-level risk analysis: Working with SFP’s risk-based approach, the company has conducted dedicated analyses of its fleet and processing plant partners, identifying environmental and social priorities, building targeted improvement plans, and tracking progress through the Seafood Metrics tool. All super frozen-specialized partner fleets have registered on the ProActive Vessel Register (PVR).
Illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing zero-tolerance policy: Comptoirs Océaniques published a comprehensive Policy Against IUU Fishing, requiring full traceability documentation for all non-EU suppliers.
Biodiversity risk analysis: In 2024, SFP worked with Comptoirs Océaniques to carry out a dedicated biodiversity risk assessment across tuna supply chains, using fishery risk tools to identify priority areas and inform the company’s fish aggregating device (FAD) management policy.

In 2026, the company published a corporate social responsibility report detailing five years of progress and measurable commitment, delivered. Highlights from the report include:

76% Responsible Sourcing (MSC-certified or in a FIP – 2025)

95% Supply Chain Disclosed (via Ocean Disclosure Project)

76% Social Audit Coverage (up from 21% in 2021)

29 Fisheries Tracked (across all tuna supply chains)

Five years of progress

2020: RSE strategy formalized. SFP partnership begins. IUU risk prevention integrated into procurement

2021: Social audit program launched (21% coverage). Employee well-being initiatives introduced.

2022: Ocean Disclosure Project participation begins. First carbon footprint. Amfori BSCI joined. MSC volumes growing.

2023: Biodiversity risk analysis with SFP completed. ODP profile expanded to 95% of volume.

2024: FAD responsible management policy published. FSSC 22000 food safety certification obtained.

2025: IUU zero-tolerance policy published. 76% responsible sourcing. 76% social audit coverage. RSE Report 2020-2025 released.

Looking to the future

Comptoirs Océaniques’ next RSE cycle will push further on the priorities built with SFP, with a goal of reaching 90% responsible sourcing by 2030, extending social audit coverage to 70% at the factory level, and registering 100% of tuna supply chain vessels on the VOSI list by 2026. The company plans to continue working with SFP and sector partners to ensure that this progress is not only measurable but shared.
