Aquaculture Working Group on Environmental Footprint and Tool
Global
What is it?
The Aquaculture Working Group (AWG) on Environmental Footprint is a pre-competitive coalition of companies and organizations that work together to reduce the environmental impacts of aquaculture.
The AWG is currently focused on setting targets for emissions reductions, calculating greenhouse gas footprints, collecting data, and taking action to reduce emissions and the overall footprint of the aquaculture sector.
Initiated in 2021 under the coordination of IDH, the AWG’s secretariat transitioned to Sustainable Fisheries Partnership and the Aquaculture Stewardship Council in 2026.
What is it?
A pre-competitive Aquaculture Working Group facilitated by ASC and SFP and consisting of seafood supply chain companies (including feed companies), industry associations, and NGOs, with a shared interest in better understanding the environmental footprint of aquaculture and ways to reduce it.
The group aims to better measure and reduce the environmental footprint of Aquaculture products via the development and use of the Aquaculture Environmental Footprint tool and alignment with other industry initiatives.
What is it?
The Aquaculture Environmental Footprint tool is available for members of the Aquaculture Working Group on Environmental Footprint and allows them to measure their carbon, freshwater use, nitrogen, phosphorus, and food loss and waste footprint across the entire aquaculture value chain (cradle-retail).
This gives members the ability to calculate and compare the footprint for all the aquaculture products they trade. This also supports companies fulfill their Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi requirements), including scope 3 emissions. The tool is updated to ensure it aligns with reporting requirements from the major certification schemes, when applicable.
Footnote
Scope 3 emissions are those arising from companies they buy from or sell to, that are part of the supply chain but that are not under the direct influence of a company.
