Explore A Decade of Disclosure: Celebrating 10 Years of the ODP to learn more about the ODP’s 10-year journey.
As a Seafood Metrics user, you may have already seen the ODP rating attached to your seafood sourcing data. This rating is derived from a methodology used by SFP’s Ocean Disclosure Project (ODP) to turn FishSource scores into an easily understandable sustainability rating for fisheries, designating them as “Well Managed”, “Managed”, or “Needs Improvement”.
In 2026, we are implementing an update to the ODP rating methodology to bring greater consistency and alignment across fisheries assessments on FishSource, Seafood Metrics, and the ODP.
Up to now, wild fisheries with a GSSI-benchmarked certification such as the Marine Stewardship Council have automatically been considered “Well Managed.” Under the updated methodology, a fishery’s FishSource score alone determines its sustainability rating—it must score 8 or higher across the FishSource scores for Management Quality and Stock Health to be considered “Well Managed,” regardless of certification status.
This update ensures consistent evaluation across all fisheries and reflects the need for continued improvement, whether a fishery is certified or not. It also reinforces that improvements should be fishery-wide, not just enacted by a segment of the fishery. For companies publishing these ratings through the ODP or other means, this change will enhance reporting transparency, increase trust among stakeholders, and reduce the risk of making misleading claims about the quality of management and health of their source fisheries.
The update will be applied to all wild sources supplied in the year 2025 and onwards, and reflected in ODP profiles for 2026 onwards.
