At the 13th annual International Congress at the Conxemar International Frozen Seafood Exhibition, SFP Supply Chain Roundtable Director Carmen González-Vallés participated in a panel on “Future Approaches and Growth Strategies” in the global seafood sector. Carmen addressed the critical issue of unregulated or poorly regulated fishing areas, particularly in the high seas, where several squid fisheries operate under limited management frameworks. This situation creates risks and uncertainty for markets that depend on these raw materials. Collaboration between flag states and market states is urgently needed to ensure responsible supply chains and sustainable fisheries.

Conxemar (Spanish Association of Wholesalers, Importers, Exporters and Processors of Fishery and Aquaculture Products), the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), and the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA) co-host the annual International Congress in conjunction with the Conxemar International Frozen Seafood Exhibition. This year’s Congress commemorated the 30th anniversary of the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries, with a theme that recognized the contribution of fisheries and aquaculture to global nutrition, food security, and healthy and sustainable livelihoods.

The International Congress took place on October 6, 2025, in Vigo, Spain.
