Purina Europe's support for global bycatch mitigation

How Purina Europe's interest in supply chain improvements led to a collaboration with SFP to reduce global bycatch.

In 2021, our longtime partner Purina Europe came to SFP with a problem. The company wanted to support bycatch mitigation in their supply chain, but, because of the nature of their business – buying fish trimmings for pet food – it could be challenging to be certain that any supported activities were directly impacting their supply chain.

What Purina did know was that they were buying a lot of tuna, and that tuna fisheries have a lot of issues related to bycatch, which is the capture of non-target species during fishing. So they decided that they would like to broadly address bycatch issues in tuna fisheries – and beyond – whether or not they were a part of the Purina supply chain.

A collaborative development process

Purina was an active participant throughout the conceptualization and development of the Hub. In addition to funding to do research and hire a web developer and bycatch team, the company offered a valuable markets-based perspective to complement SFP’s science-based approach. Purina’s insight helped SFP understand how best to present information to companies on the benefits of these projects and their connection to business decisions.

The Hub was first presented to industry at Seafood Expo North America in Boston in March 2023, and was then officially launched during a conference session at Seafood Expo Global in Barcelona in April 2023. Through the Hub, SFP’s team finds projects that are scalable and practical, and presents them to the seafood industry to support the next stage of implementation.

Supporting specific Hub projects

Looking ahead

In its first two years, the Hub facilitated nearly USD 800,000 of bycatch-mitigation efforts around the world, through more than 15 separate projects. And interest from seafood buyers continues to grow. Purina’s initial vision has even brought some of its major competitors onboard, including Mars, which is jointly funding a project with Purina in Chile through a pre-competitive collaboration worth nearly USD 100,000.

Even as the Hub’s successes continue, Purina is still helping SFP look for ways to improve the site. A key challenge in bycatch mitigation is quantifying what impacts implementation of these solutions has on marine wildlife. Purina plans to support SFP in convening a workshop that will bring together scientists, NGOs, and other stakeholders to help figure out how to measure impact.

“We wanted to be the founding sponsor of the Bycatch Solutions Hub to kickstart action by the seafood industry to help protect ocean wildlife. The resources are there, but there are major barriers for industry and companies in finding and supporting practical, real-life solutions. The Hub connects stakeholders who care about marine life that previously could not find each other.
