Impact
Healthy Ecosystems
Thriving fisheries only exist in healthy habitats.
When we talk about sustainable fisheries, it’s not just about the fish. It’s also about where they live. Healthy, balanced ecosystems lead to abundant fisheries and benefit industry, nature, and communities.
SFP bridges the gap between companies that want to take action to protect biodiversity and nature and organizations that are doing good work on the ground and in the water. And we help these organizations scale-up their activities, using the reach and leverage of industry to expand efforts for wider impact.
The most influential retailers and seafood brands are beginning to look beyond certification to guide their sourcing and monitor their impacts on nature and biodiversity. With our existing data tools and platforms, SFP can develop new ecosystem level indicators – in both aquaculture and wild-capture fisheries – that include environmental, governance, and social factors. These indicators can be applied at the jurisdictional or landscape level in key aquaculture areas, and in Large Marine Ecosystems (LMEs) in the ocean.

Protecting Ocean Wildlife
Protecting Ocean Wildlife
Hundreds of thousands of sharks, whales and dolphins, sea turtles, and seabirds are harmed or killed in commercial fishing each year. Our work on reducing this bycatch of non-target species focuses on adoption of best practices, increased monitoring, and development of new technologies.

Protecting Coastal Habitats
Protecting Coastal Habitats
Aquaculture accounts for more than half of the world’s seafood. Our work on ecosystem-level aquaculture management focuses on the protection and regeneration of coastal mangrove habitats, managing the impacts of feed production, and establishing responsible sourcing areas across whole landscapes.
