An Essential Safeguard: Ecosystem Based Fisheries Management Can Improve Aquaculture Sustainability

Panel: Wednesday, May 7, 10:45-11:45 a.m., Room CC5.2
The growing demand for aquaculture products has put more pressure than ever on the forage fisheries that provide crucial ingredients for fish feed. But traditional fisheries management has often overlooked the broader ecosystem role of these small fish as essential food sources for seabirds, whales, seals, and other ocean predators. This panel will discuss how managers, scientists, and industry can work together to promote ecosystem-based fisheries management, which requires decision makers to evaluate success based on the overall health of an ecosystem, rather than focusing on a single species.
Panelists: SFP Global Supply Chains Director Dave Martin, Katy Hladki and Andrew Clayton of the Pew Charitable Trusts, and Goncalo Carvalho of Sciaena
