International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC)
Global
What is it?
ISCC is a sustainability certification system for all feedstocks and markets.
Depending on the market you would like to supply your sustainable material to, a certain certification system has to be chosen.
Of most relevance to feed and the ingredients it contains are the following:
- ISCC Non-GMO Food and Feed – a module for the sole certification of non-genetically modified materials and products. It is applicable for food and feed products and completely independent from the general ISCC EU and PLUS sustainability certification on farm/plantation and supply chain level; and,
- ISCC PLUS covers all types of agricultural and forestry raw materials, biowastes and residues, renewable feedstocks, and fossil materials contributing to the circular economy and bio-economy.
- Protection of land with high biodiversity value or high carbon stock;
- Environmentally responsible production to protect soil, water, and air;
- Safe working conditions;
- Compliance with human, labor, and land rights and responsible community relations;
- Compliance with applicable laws and relevant international treaties; and,
- Good management practices and commitment to continuous improvement.
- Bio feedstocks derived from virgin biomass, whereas biomass refers to the biodegradable fraction of products from agriculture, forestry, and related industries including fisheries and aquaculture, e.g. corn, sugarcane, rapeseed, etc;
- Bio-circular and circular feedstocks, materials at the beginning of the supply chain considered as waste/ processing residues that are not landfilled or energetically used, but instead re-used, re-distributed, re-furbished, re-manufactured or recycled in a loop without dropping out of the economy; and
- Renewable-energy-derived feedstock comprises products that use renewable energy (e.g., renewable electricity or other renewable energy sources except for biomass) as an integral part of the reaction (e.g. redox reactions, electrolysis.
What is it?
International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) is a certification system that offers solutions for the implementation and certification of sustainable, deforestation-free, and traceable supply chains of agricultural, forestry, waste and residue raw materials, non-bio renewables, and recycled carbon materials and fuels.
Under ISCC PLUS, all types of agricultural and forestry raw materials, waste and residues, non-bio renewables, and recycled carbon materials and fuels are covered.
ISCC applies strict rules for the conservation of valuable landscapes as well as the environmentally friendly and socially responsible production of agricultural and forestry raw materials. ISCC does not accept any form of compensation or remuneration for breaches of system requirements.
Farms and plantations that produce sustainable agricultural biomass must comply with the following sustainability:
ISCC provides a methodology for calculating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for all elements of the supply chain and for determining greenhouse gas emissions savings. This can be applied to supply chains in all markets.
Raw Material Category
Under ISCC PLUS the following three raw material categories (arising at the beginning of the supply chain) can be certified:
