SFP Biodiversity and Nature Director Kathryn Novak (above left) moderated a panel on gear innovation in snow crab and lobster fisheries at the Global Alliance’s Responsible Seafood Summit in New Brunswick, Canada. The panelists discussed the need for a solution to the increasing overlap between North Atlantic right whales and the crab and lobster fishing grounds, highlighting successful trials of on-demand or “ropeless” gear and the Canadian Wildlife Federation’s CanFISH gear lending library. Martin Noël, a snow crab fisherman out of New Brunswick who has been fishing for nearly 30 years and has been trialing the new gear, said on the panel that while he was initially skeptical, “at the end of the day success changes perception…we’re on the right path.”
