The Global Feed LCA Institute (GFLI) and database
Global
What is it?
The Global Feed LCA Institute (GFLI) is an independent animal nutrition and food industry institute that is developing a publicly available Animal Nutrition Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) database.
The Animal Nutrition Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) database was recently updated and includes LCAs of raw materials from various regions in the world to support the environmental assessment of animal nutrition products and continuous environmental improvement within the animal nutrition and food industry.
The GFLI offers 1) a commercial license for in-house company use of GFLI data for analysis, research, development, reports, presentations, and communications, and 2) a developer license for integration of GFLI data into a software/tool accessible to third parties, consultancy services, or other cases where third parties have access to (part of) the GFLI database.
How to use it?
The GFLI database – Version 2.2 September 2024, includes more than 1830 datasets. IT has three different allocations of the data available for use: economic, mass, and energy content, and two impact assessment methods available: ReCiPe & EF.
Multiple plant-based and marine feed ingredients are provided representing multiple countries and regional averages, 53 percent of the datasets are representing European sourced or processed ingredients, 15 percent North America, 14 percent Asia, 7 percent South America, with the rest of the percentage specified for other regions or global averages. The sources are based on publicly available statistical data and/or aggregated industry data. Access to the database can be purchased through a license.
Footnote:
An LCA is a method to evaluate the use of resources and emission of pollutants during the life cycle of a feed ingredient.
