What is it?
Trase is a tool providing open access data and insights to enable organizations, including governments, finance, companies, and NGOs to identify risks of deforestation in commodity supply chains.
Trase is a partnership between Global Canopy and the Stockholm Environment Institute, which works with data developers, researchers, designers, institutes, and other partners.
Trase combines data on commodity production and trade with a material flow analysis to map supply chains linking consumer markets with production regions via traders. Trase quantifies exposure to deforestation and other environmental impacts for consumer markets sourcing commodities from various production regions.
Trase enables companies to:
- Assess their supply chain deforestation exposure via import markets, commodity traders, and physical assets.
- Highlight where action is needed to address deforestation risks in complex commodity supply chains using Trase data and tools.
How to use it
Trase provides open access data in a CSV file format outlining the country of export origin (or province/state) of commodities such as soy and palm oil etc., to their destination importing countries. Details on associated volumes and trading companies are also provided.
By tracing flows through identified traders, downstream companies can link their commodity purchases to production countries (and regions within them).
Each data set is accompanied by a methodology and reference.
The platform also provides insights and publications that can be used to identify the risk of deforestation and other environmental and social impacts potentially related to commodity production.
