Call for Fisheries or Aquaculture Analysts

Date:         May 2022

Position:   Fisheries or aquaculture analysts

Type:         Independent contractor

Term:         Ongoing

Background on SFP

Founded in 2006, Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP) is a marine conservation organization working toward a world where the oceans are healthy, all seafood is produced sustainably, and everyone has access to sustainable seafood. We leverage the power of seafood buyers and retailers in every part of the seafood supply chain to rebuild depleted fish stocks, reduce the environmental impacts of fishing and fish farming, address social issues in fishing, and advance economic opportunities for fishers and their communities. Our Supply Chain Roundtables (SRs) allow seafood suppliers to work together in a pre-competitive environment to promote and support improvements in fishery and aquaculture practices, management, and policy. Background on FishSource

SFP’s FishSource is a publicly available online global database of fisheries, fish stocks, and aquaculture. FishSource is growing a network of aquatic resource analysts and would like to invite individuals, organizations, or university programs with expertise in fisheries or aquaculture sustainability to apply to join our pool of independent contractors.

Aquaculture and fisheries information in FishSource provides high-quality, scientific, and objective analysis, presented in a highly summarized form under individual FishSource profiles. The information is used by the world’s biggest retailers, foodservice providers, and seafood companies.

Aquaculture

FishSource aquaculture profiles assess how individual aquaculture industries are managing their environmental impacts. Using the FishSource aquaculture methodology, aquaculture analysts are responsible for producing profiles (narrative, data, and scores) that assess whether the industry has adopted (or is in the process of introducing) zonal management.

This approach, which is often referred to as a landscape approach, recognizes that farms are interconnected and share the same resources, and aims to ensure that industry growth is based on scientific evidence of carrying capacities and disease risks.

Individual aquaculture industries are those defined by:

  • An individual species group (salmon, shrimp, tilapia etc.,)
  • A province or state within a country
  • Environment (freshwater, marine, brackishwater).

Fisheries

FishSource wild fisheries profiles assess the status, management, and environmental impacts of stocks and fisheries globally. FishSource defines a fishery as conducted by a flag state with a specific fishing gear on a stock of a single species or taxon, within a management unit.

Analysts will use the FishSource wild-capture methodology to summarize and score the stock health, the precaution of the management strategy, and scale of compliance. Analysts will also evaluate the environmental impacts on other ecosystem components.
