It is with profound sadness that we report the death of Rafael Basto Becerra, a project coordinator for Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP). He died in a car accident on Monday, September 6, 2010.
Rafael worked with SFP in the Upper Gulf of California, Mexico. During the time he collaborated with SFP, Rafael worked tirelessly on developing sustainable fisheries in the region. He was particularly successful at collaborating with the fishermen of San Felipe Baja California on the design and evaluation of environmentally friendly fishing systems.
Rafael was respected and admired by colleagues and the fishing community because of his tremendous commitment and sense of responsibility for improving fisheries for the communityʼs benefit. SFP extends its heartfelt condolences and support to Rafaelʼs family during this difficult time. Rafael will be laid to rest in Nayarit, Mexico.
